From the Men’s President

The end of yet another season is drawing nigh – where do they all go?! A few more inter-club matches and Friday Leagues to play plus Finals weekend to come. It looks as though there may be some new names on cups this year – which is always grat- ifying from the club’s viewpoint but not necessarily from former winners! Do all make an effort to attend at least one of the Finals Days – Saturday and Sunday 9th and 10th September – and view some decent bowling from the sidelines.

The annual Presidents’ v Captains’ match held on Bank Holiday Monday

28th August was, in my view, an unqualified success due in no small measure to the near miraculous Bank Holiday sunshine. 36 players took part and I thank them for their participation and punctuality in what was without doubt a most enjoyable afternoon’s bowling and sociable evening, plus a fish and chip supper (Captains won 110 – 84). My thanks are extended to my co-partners, President Ann Jenkins, Ladies’ Captain Gill Lewis and Men’s

Captain Len Batchelor, Jean Gorf for the food extras and Reg and Beryl Cook for serving the afternoon tea and biscuits. It was also pleasing to see several former members of both clubs in attendance throughout the afternoon and also Carol Melvin, our Lady Mayor, and Consort.

Well done all, including any I may have failed to mention.

Enjoy what remains of the season.

From the Ladies' President

I have just got home from a really lovely afternoon. The Presidents v Captains match is always enjoyed by us all. The Captains won this year but we will not talk about that will we!! The weather was perfect and we were able to eat our fish and chips outside in the evening sunshine.

Tomorrow I am off on holiday so will see you all at the Men’s Finals Days. Don’t forget everyone to support these great days as the finalists have worked hard to get there.

From the Men's Captain

In the Bidgood League we lost on both rinks away to Harrow and so did not gain any points. Against Hendon away we won on one rink and lost on the other but had the higher aggre- gate and so gained 3 points. The next match was away again, this time against Pinner where we lost on both rinks and so came away pointless.

On the 24th of August we had our last match. This time we were at home to Ladygate needing a win or a draw to avoid relegation from Division 1. Rink 1 finished 17-18 and on Rink 2 the score was tied at 14-14 on the last end with us holding shot with just one wood to come. Their skip wicked off a short wood, turned over our shot

wood, and they won the end on a measure. So we lost the match and are demoted as a result of a wick! It’s a cruel game sometimes. Overall we had played 8 matches - won 3, lost 5 and gained 11 points.

On a lighter note we had a most enjoyable mixed match at home against Oxhey at the end of August. Former members of our Clubs Dave and Heather O’Sullivan were playing and looking well. We lost the match 77-85 but had a really good social session in the clubhouse after.

Happy bowling

                                                                                                                                          Len Batchelor
